Surprise Award Recognizes TMS Principal and Teacher

Museum School Principal Katherine Kelbaugh and second grade teacher Lillian Galicia have been named “best of the best” in Atlanta education.

Presented by Atlanta Families' Awards for Excellence in Education, the awards aim to retain excellent teachers and school leaders. The Museum School is honored to be the only school with two award winners in 2015 and the only one with three winners overall; Assistant Principal Mike Stewart received this award previously.

Kelbaugh and Galicia were surprised with the awards during an August 27 assembly with all Museum School students and staff, their own families, representatives from Atlanta Families Awards, DeKalb Schools Superintendent Dr. Stephen Green and WSB-TV. Congratulations!

Taking Innovation Nationwide

We’re Building the Nation’s First Association of Museum Schools!

Introducing the National Association of Museum Schools! A recently awarded federal grant has allowed our school to create the first nationwide museum school network, working to unite more than 40 museum schools from at least 10 states. The association will share best practices for boosting student achievement at top-performing schools with educators and administrators across the nation.

The vision of Katherine Kelbaugh, principal of The Museum School of Avondale Estates, the project aims to improve student engagement and achievement in a substantial way across Georgia and the country!

Videos Spotlight Museum School Students and Staff

A recent video produced by the Georgia Governor's Office of Student Achievement highlights The Museum School's unique Museum in a Box program!

As the recipient of a federal Race to the Top grant through the governor's Innovation Fund, our school uses museum-style trunks to share its hands-on learning model with elementary and middle schools across the state. The video features a number of Museum School students and teachers doing what they do best - exploring!

In addition, this fall, some of our third-grade students starred in a video promoting interactive classroom teaching tools from the Promethean company.

Exhibit Night: When Our Little Explorers Shine!

Exhibit Night is a special time at The Museum School: You never know who or what you'll find on display. Four times a year, our students re-enact pivotal moments in history, conduct science experiments and show off their work, from hand-crafted zoos and rainforest models to sun dials, gravity rooms, a student garden and so much more!

Be our guest at the next Exhibit Night:
Thursday, October 8, 2015 from 5-8 p.m.

Going Greener

The Museum School is an applicant for the Grants to Green program - a partnership helping nonprofit organizations become more green by reducing energy and water use.

The ongoing effort to achieve greater sustainability is just one of the many ways our school lives its core values every day!
